Jay-Jay and The Carnival

Jay-Jay and the Carnival Cover

Jay-Jay the Supersonic Bus is a brightly coloured playbus full of toys. He’s always ready for adventure, and after an eventful summer the bus is ready for his journey to the carnival. The children are also excited – but what will happen on the way?

Our Thoughts.

My daughter just loves reading these stories! The bright pictures and colours and the adventure. Her older brother will listen to but the amazement and wonder is already drifting away from his imagination! To be replaced with but mum questions.

I will most certainly passes this book onto my kids school when they return in September!

I love Sue Wickstead’s work and will most certainly be an author I miss as I take a step back from book blogging to try and read at least some of my TBR!

Sue tells us about herself…..

I am a teacher and an author and have currently written six children’s picture books with a bus theme.

For over 20 years, alongside my teaching career, I worked with a Children’s Charity, The Bewbush Playbus Association, which led me to write a photographic history book about it.

I soon found that many children had never been on a bus before, let alone a ‘Playbus’ and they wanted to know more. I decided to write a fictional tale about the bus, his number plate JJK261 gave him his name.

‘Jay-Jay the Supersonic Bus,’ came out in print in 2014. It is the story behind the original bus and is his journey from a scrap-yard to being changed into a playbus for children to play in. From Fact to fiction the bus journey continued.

This story has now been followed by five more picture books.

I also undertake events and author bookings and love to share the story. There are also a few more stories in the writing process, with links to real events and buses.

The story has been read in many schools in the south-East of England, where I teach as a cover teacher, it is always well received and certainly different.

Jay-Jay and his Island Adventure

Jay-Jay the Supersonic Bus is not an ordinary bus taking you on a journey. He is a Playbus. Find out what happens when he is invited to an island where the children have never seen a double-decker bus – and certainly not one full of toys!

Our Thoughts.

Sue Wickstead can do no wrong, why hasn’t this author been snapped up by one of the big five! She has returnable lovely characters. How many of us have travelled at speed to get up a ramp and damaged our cars!  and Jay-Jay bus that comes to life! Why isn’t this bus on our television screens?

The imagery in the pictures are clear and crisp and my daughter loves looking closer at them just in case she, she’s missed something!

These books are winning their way to my kids school once we’ve finished with them, where hopefully they will be shared with future generations.

Please tell me there are going to be more to come in the series!

Behind the story:

‘Jay-Jay and his Island Adventure’, was originally written for a Scottish book bus.

‘Play,Talk, Read’ was the project which visited remote areas if Scotland to encourage reading in the very young. It was a great success and the bus even visited the Shetland Islands travelling on a very small ferry.

The children had never seen a double-decker on their island before and certainly not one to play on.

However, the Scottish project was too busy with referendums and with the book ready and edited I changed the name of the bus from Benji, sending Jay-Jay instead.

The island on the cover of the book was based on a piece of mainland Spain which I have visited many times.

Cap D’Or is the promentory near to a little village of Moraira.

The villagers in Moraira invited me to read this book in their library and local schools.

The people in this little village were surprised to find that Jay-Jay was a real bus.

(Jay-Jay may not have got to Spain in reality but in my imagination he did and now all of the books are in the local library in both Teulada and Moraira.)

Jay-Jay The Supersonic Bus

Jay-Jay The Supersonic Bus Cover

Jay-Jay the bus is rescued from the dirty scrap yard, where he was sadly gathering dust and cobwebs. Feeling nervous yet excited, he is taken to an airport where he is magically transformed into a ‘Playbus’ full of toys, games and adventure.

A fictional tale based on a real-life bus ‘Supersonic’, which flew in the imaginations of the many young children who visited it.

Our Thoughts.

I really enjoyed this book, I liked how this book is clearly the beginning of a series. The book tells the tale of a bus that was found on a scrap yard. One day some people came along and he was pick and renovated into a play bus. This story really captures the imagination of my youngest Melanie. Though at one point Alex was a bit like “they are fitted alot of things on that bus!” This book is ideal for those little ones and a great starting point for hopefully more amazing books to come.

Alex: You liked the book because it tricked me into thinking that the bus was just going to be used at the airport for shuttling passengers 🙂

Melanie: I liked it all.
